Swinburne also took up literary criticism and wrote on Baudelaire, Blake, Hugo, Byron and many others. The criticism was variable in quality and ranged from incisive erudition to simply unjustified attacks. Swinburne remained with Watts-Dunton in Putney until his death in 1909.
