Writing Poems

Writing Your Own Poems

Writing poems is really not all that difficult, at least for most people.
All y
ou need to do is think of a subject. An example could

be old Jake He was our most favorite dog. Then think about the
things you liked most a
bout him, the things he done that

was funny, how he brought joy to you, how dedicated he was, and
anything else that you can think o
f that would be important

to mention. Make a list of those ideas and you have the start of a poem

Together let’s see what we can do.

  • Title
  • Happy dog, always wagging his tail
  • Chased his own tail
  • Loved to hunt squirrels
  • Was always nearby
  • Never ran off
  • Loved to crack and eat pecans
  • Liked to play ball
  • A loveable mutt

Old Jake, A True Friend.

Old Jake was special, really special was he

Every time I called he would come to me

He would wag his tail all the day long

Every once in a while he would sing a song.

He loved to hunt near as much as I

Keeping his nose pointed toward the sky

Squirrels was what he liked the most

He was the best, not meaning to boast

He was as funny as funny could be

Chasing his tail while laughing at me

Then he’d stop and crack a nut

And eat them things till he filled his gut.

Old Jakes gone now, I miss him a lot

He’s buried out their in his own little lot

I loved old Jake right to the end

I loved him because he was a true friend.

You can follow this same procedure with any idea or concept you
would like to write about. By making a list it helps you

to think of more words in relationship to what you want to write
about, and helps to keep you on track. I find it helpful

when I determine the last line first so that I have an
ending point coninciding with my title.

Try it, you’ll be surprised at what you can accomplish, don’t
give up.
keep at it until you get a few lines that make sense

and rhyme. Composing poetry gives you a real sense of accomplishment,
and it is
very nice when someone says, you really

wrote that, and you can reply with a resounding YES!

I have a lot of other poems on this site which you may
enjoy such as,
That Little House, or The Old Man And A Boy.

You can find a complete list of my poems by clicking here.

Come back often, this is a dynamic site, we are always
adding new c
ontent, and ideas, some of which you may find helpful.
